DEVELOPMENT OF NEW RAW MATERIALS

Amongst the many advances in ‘new’ materials are the plastic polymers which have evolved dramatically, especially over the past century; indeed as recently as we entered into the 21st century, for we have witnessed advances in fabrics and composites which were unimaginable just thirty years ago.

Where transport is concerned, there is a dramatic revolution taking place, with a prime focus on the environment and new generation electric vehicles, offering exceptional fuel efficiency and autonomy, to improve road safety and dramatically reduce road incidents. As we become ever more aware of our finite global resources, such as fossil fuels depleting rapidly, scientists and engineers are exploring new and better ways to create ingenious forms of transport for an ever burgeoning demographic.

LIGHT-WEIGHT CONSTRUCTION

Emphasis is being placed on developing products not only of outstanding durability, but also incorporating additional benefits such as improved safety and light weight components to dramatically improve fuel consumption, and this is where CLI excels in what it can offer.

Everyday commodities such as fuel efficient automobiles are now in great demand, and as manufacturers turn their attention to improving performance, within their design equations they must factor in essential considerations such as weight, wind drag, and safety.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FUEL EFFICIENCY

Perhaps no other measure is more important to fuel consumption than weight, especially with electric cars where power cell batteries alone add huge weight to a vehicle. Yet windows, windshields and panoramic sun-roofs have also increased as a proportion of the vehicles surface area; so every ounce counts! As an example, it has been reported American Airlines removed just one olive from its on-board catering salads, resulting in an estimated annual fuel saving of $40,000.

MODERN LIGHT-WEIGHT POLYMERS

Modern polymers such as polycarbonate, acrylic and special formulated PVC are extremely lightweight yet highly durable and remarkably strong. The specific gravity of glass is 2.50; by comparison, polycarbonate is far more durable in terms on impact resistance, yet has a specific gravity of less than half of glass, at just 1,19.

This may well be why Boeing abandoned traditional aluminum to coat its 787 Dreamliner, opting to replace the outer skin of the aircraft with 100% plastic composites. Indeed 50% of all components in the 787 are made from plastic derivatives ― Shocking as this may be to believe. Regardless, the 787 is regarded as the most efficient commercial airliner in operation today.
